1/16/2024 0 Comments Moral dom synonymHistorical lexicology or etymology discusses the origin of various words, their change and development, and investigates the linguistic and extra-linguistic forces modifying their structure, meaning and usage. Special lexiсоlоgу devotes its attention to the description of the characteristic peculiarities in the vocabulary of a given language (Ukrainian, French, etc.). Linguistic phenomena and properties common to all languages are generally referred to language universals. The general study of words and vocabulary, irrespective of the specific features of any particular language, is known as general lexicology. A word therefore is simultaneously a semantic, grammatical and phonological unit. The term word denotes the basic unit of a given language resulting from the association of a particular meaning with a particular group of sounds. The term vосabularу is used to denote the system of words and word equivalents that the language possesses. The literal meaning of the term ‘lexicology' is “the science of the word”. Lexicology ( from Gr lexis ‘word’ and logos ‘learning’) is the part of linguistics dealing with the vocabulary of the language and the prop erties of words as the main units of the language. The additional material includes tests aimed at checking up the comprehension of the theoretical material and the ability to apply it in practice and the list of words of English and American spelling peculiarities. The aim of the lectures is to lead the students to a deeper understanding of the Modern English lexical system, to be word-conscious, to be able to guess the meaning of words they come across from the meanings of morphemes, to be able to recognise the origin of a lexical unit. The manual includes the lectures on the following topics: the Morphological and Semantic Structure of English Words, Word-formation and Phraseology in Modern English, the Etymology of Words, Lexicography, etc. Its main purpose is to introduce the students to some major lexicological problems connected with the general theory of the word and the main problems associated with English vocabulary, its characteristics and subdivisions, the stylistic peculiarities of English vocabulary, the complex nature of the word's meaning, English idioms and some other aspects of English. Each unit includes the theoretical material on the problem under consideration and the exercises for seminars and independent work. This manual is intended for students of Primary and Preschool departments at Pedagogical College (4th year of studies) taking the optional course of English lexicology and fully meets the requirements of the curriculum.
